Tourism in Tromsø Has a Problem
Tromsø receives over half a million visitors a year — remarkable for a city of 77,000 people. Most of them book the same tours: a bus to chase the northern lights, a boat to see whales, a husky ride in a commercial kennel. These experiences can be memorable, but they're often rushed, crowded, and disconnected from what Northern Norway actually feels like.
Locals don't experience the Arctic that way. On a winter weekend, a Tromsø local straps on snowshoes and walks into the nearest fjord valley. They bring a thermos, find a quiet spot, and take their time. It's simple, unhurried, and deeply satisfying. That's the experience we want to share with you.

What "Like a Local" Means to Us
- →Small and personal. Our tours are private — just your group and a local guide. No large buses, no 40-person groups, no script.
- →Real places. We walk Kaldfjorden, a fjord that locals actually use for hiking, fishing, and kayaking. It's not a tourist attraction — it's a real part of our landscape.
- →Homemade touches. The cookies and warm blackcurrant juice at our mid-trail stop aren't a gimmick. It's what Norwegians bring on a winter hike — saft and something sweet.
- →No rush. We don't time the hike to a bus schedule. You walk at your pace, stop when something catches your eye, and enjoy being outside.
- →Guides who live here. Your guide grew up in Tromsø. They'll share local recommendations, explain how life works this far north, and answer the questions a travel blog can't.

The Story Behind Skyguide
We started Skyguide because we saw a gap: visitors arriving in Tromsø full of excitement, and leaving having mostly sat on buses. We wanted to offer the kind of Arctic day that we enjoy ourselves — snowshoeing along a quiet fjord, breathing cold air, watching the light change over the mountains.
Our first tour route was Kaldfjorden, and it remains our favourite. It's close, it's beautiful, and it's the trail we walk ourselves on days off. When you join us, you're not following a commercial product — you're sharing a place we genuinely love.
Who This Is For
Travellers who care more about authenticity than bucket lists. People who'd rather walk a quiet trail than ride a crowded bus. Visitors who want to go home with stories, not just photos. If that sounds like you, this is your tour.
